{Book Review} Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell

My Thoughts:

Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell is a magical epic adventure filled with pirates, fairies, and magic. Maxwell’s unique spin on this retelling of Peter Pan has me on Team Hook, for like the first time ever. I’ve always been on Peter’s side, but after reading this take on the classic story I’m completely taken with Maxwell’s Captain Hook. Gwendolyn Allister’s mom is a bit on the crazy side, at least Gwen has always thought her mother was slightly off. Then one night Gwen discovers that her mother isn’t insane at all and that the monsters really do exist. Taken by dark creatures in the night, Gwen wakes up to find herself on a ship in a strange new land. She soon discovers this new land is called Neverland and the ship she is on belongs to the infamous Captain Hook. He’s nothing like in the stories though, and Gwen finds herself torn on who she should trust – the handsome pirate or the charming leader of the lost boys.

Gwen is such a strong female character both mentally and emotionally. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to grow up with a parent that you thought was not entirely sane. She’s very calm when she finds herself in situations most people would freak out over, like being held captive on Hook’s ship for one. Gwen’s personality is fierce and she doesn’t back down from a fight. I love that despite being afraid she puts on a brave face and goes toe to toe with Hook and Pan. She is definitely my favorite character in this book.

Unhooked starts out a bit slow, there is quite a bit of foreshadowing and suspense for what is to come later in the story. Don’t let this throw you off because the story really picks up once Gwen finds herself in Neverland. There are many plot twists and action packed scenes charged with a dark and ominous atmosphere. It’s definitely a page turner and I found it really hard to put down once I started it.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell. It’s a thrilling adventurous ride that I breezed through in one sitting. I haven’t read many retellings of Peter Pan, but I absolutely loved this one. It has everything I could want in a great story. There’s a bit of romance, danger, suspense, mystery, and magic. I highly recommend this to anyone. If you have not read it yet, then you should. It was absolutely epic and now I want to go back and read it again.
