What made me want to read it: I adore Kate Meader’s Hot in the Kitchen series. She’s a must read author for me.
As the only female firefighter at Engine Co. 6, Alexandra Dempsey gets it from all sides: the male coworkers who think she can’t do the job, the wives and girlfriends who see her as a threat to their firefighter men, and her overprotective foster brothers who want to shelter their baby sister at all costs. So when she single-handedly saves the life of Eli Cooper, Chicago’s devastatingly handsome mayor, she assumes the respect she’s longed for will finally come her way. But it seems Mr. Mayor has other ideas…
Eli Cooper’s mayoral ratings are plummeting, his chances at reelection dead in the water. When a sexy, curvaceous firefighter gives him the kiss of life, she does more than bring him back to the land of the living—she also breathes vitality into his campaign. Riding the wave of their feel-good story might prop up Eli’s flagging political fortunes, but the sizzling attraction between them can go nowhere; he’s her boss, and there are rules that must be obeyed. But you know what they say about rules: they’re made to be broken…
Kate Meader is on fire! Her latest series, Hot in Chicago, follows a group of foster siblings that follow in the steps of their parent to become firefighters. Playing with Fire is the second book in Meader’s new must-read series, featuring Mayor Eli Cooper and firefighter Alex Dempsey. These two love to hate each other as much as they hate the undeniable attraction they share. I love the “enemies to lovers” theme. The sparks between Eli and Alex practically jumped off the pages whether they were fighting or loving each other.
Eli Cooper is old-fashioned in his views of what professions are acceptable for women. He constantly goes head to head with Alex in public. He’s former military, and a hero in his own right trying to live up to the public image his father left as his legacy after he died. He’s a sexy and confident alpha male that is completely set in his ways. This makes his fall for Alex even more entertaining to witness.
Alex Dempsey is a tough and independent woman. She has to be as the only female firefighter on Engine Co. 6. She is absolute in her belief that women and men are equals. I adored her tenacity and fierce personality. I think these qualities make her the perfect match for Eli because she keeps him on his toes.
Overall, Playing with Fire is a fun and sizzling hot read. Meader mixes explosive chemistry with witty humor, a little bit of action, and juicy scandals to create another fan-freakin-tastic read. I fell in love with Kate Meader’s writing while reading her Hot in the Kitchen series. I can already tell her new series, Hot in Chicago; will be a must-read for me. I love, love, love, LOVE the Dempseys! I can’t wait to go back and read the first book. If you are looking for a contemporary romance with firefighters, and hot alpha males I recommend this one.
“Watching him walk over, Alex mused that Eli Cooper was the sort of man who knew how to use his physicality. Beneath his handmade shirts and tailored suits, a street fighter hummed through every loose-limbed motion. But that impression did not extend to his face, which was structurally perfect. Skyscraper-high cheekbones. Superhero jaw. A mouth that should have a government warning. There were no signs of past trouble with a jealous husband or an abandoned girlfriend. No one had ever broken his nose. No one had busted his lip.
Strange, because her first instinct on seeing him was to roundhouse kick him into the next millennium.”
“She pushed him back to the desk, poking his chest.
“I may punch you, bite you, crush your nuts between my thighs. It’s going to be the best hate sex I’ve ever had. And your survival is not my first concern.”
